Misconception # 1 -
We are all God's children -
If everyone automatically belonged to God, then why did God send His Son to walk as a man on the earth for 33 years, experiencing what it is to be flesh? “The Word became human flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of The One and Only Son, who came from The Father, Who is full of grace and truth.” - John 1:14. Jesus had to walk out His life here on the earth in perfect obedience to The Father. He was sinless. “For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God through Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 5:21. Jesus died a horrible death in our place, taking sin upon Himself, becoming sin, and He took the punishment for death by spending time in hell so that we would not have to. “But He was wounded and pierced for our transgressions and rebellion, He was crushed for our sin and iniquities; the punishment that brings us wholeness and peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed!” – Isaiah 53:5. Romans 3:22-25, “This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of His blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate His righteousness.” Jesus did all these things for us, but that does not automatically qualify everyone. Romans 6:20-23, “When you are a slave to sin, you are free from the control of righteousness and the obligation to do right. What benefit do you reap from the things you are ashamed of now? Those things result in death! But, if you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.” We each choose if we are God’s child or not. We make the choice to be free from sin and death by making Him our Lord. A lot of people KNOW that Jesus died for them. But that’s not an express ticket to heaven. We still need to decide if we will submit our will to God’s will or not. “You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.” James 2:19. James says that even the demons believe Who Jesus Is. They have to submit to His authority, but it’s against their will and doesn’t mean they are going to come out alright in the end. Hell was meant for the devil and his demons, not for people. It is God’s will that everyone should come to the knowledge of Him.
Misconception # 2 -
People have been saying Jesus is coming back for years (including recently) and nothing ever happens –
The Apostle Peter had a lot to say about this. Don't get me wrong folks, Jesus IS COMING BACK for those that love Him and trust Him! We have had some confusion within this past year about the timing of this event. However, no one but The Father knows when this is going to happen. The Bible has many clear examples of the signs of the times and what to watch for to help us be prepared, not scared! I'm not going to go into that now, but just because it hasn't happened yet, does not mean it won't! In 1 Peter 1:16 – 2:3, ”For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.”We ourselves heard this voice that came from Heaven when we were with Him on the sacred mountain. We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day of His coming dawns and The Morning Star rises in your hearts. Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by The Holy Spirit. But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.”
“Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ He promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with His promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with Him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation.” – 2 Peter 3:3-15.
Misconception # 3 -
All Christians are hypocrites -
When God created us, He did so with the intent on having a relationship with us. God walked and talked with Adam in the Garden of Eden every day, before Adam disobeyed God. The fall of man was the entire reason Jesus came to the earth and died on our behalf. But that’s not the end of the story. Jesus rose again to new life so that I could have new life in Him. I now have a way to The Father. And if I believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead and confess Jesus with my mouth, then I am His child. It is so simple, it is not based on my good or bad works, what I have or have not done, only if I believe in the One that God sent for me. What I do after I receive God’s salvation for me is important! Am I going to DO the works that Jesus commanded? “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” - Matthew 22:37-39. Now, the journey with God really begins, because that takes some doing! We have to rely on the Holy Spirit to teach us, show us and help us along! If we are God’s children than we are going to express God’s will in the earth, in our communities and to the people around us. No, we aren’t going to do a perfect job all the time! Unfortunately, that’s what is shown so much in the media, the failings and shortcomings of people in the church, and even what we show to each other sometimes. But, as God’s ambassadors in the earth, we need to strive to keep the commandments of God. “What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.” –James 2:14-18, 26. Jesus only did what He saw His Father in Heaven doing. If we see a fellow believer or a family member in need, it’s our responsibility to help them out. God takes it pretty seriously to provide, not only our own families, but also the orphans and widows. He always made provision for them and the foreigners. “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” – James 1:27.
This is just an example of the kinds of things true Christians should be doing in their lives. If someone has misrepresented The Lord Jesus to you, God wants you to know that whatever they did to wrong you was absolutely NOT WHAT GOD INTENDED for you! If you have observed or experienced depraved conduct from someone who called themselves a follower of Christ and it has caused you to question God, God wants you to know that it was never His intention to have the Truth of His Word maligned like that! God is lovingly calling you to a life of peace and fulfillment in Him, a life where YOU will go out and do the works that Jesus made the way for us to do!
