I find it interesting that at the height of the most colorful time of the year, when it seems that the glory of a Creator all around us can't possibly be missed, is when people go berserk with the ugliest decorations that they can find. Honestly, there is some really hideous stuff out there and I don't mean neighbor Bob's tacky pink flamingo on the front lawn.
Personally, I fail to see the big attraction to everything gross and gruesome. I do, however, see the attraction to the counterfeit. People have a yearning for eternity in their hearts - Ecclesiastes 3:11 states, "..God has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end." There is such a prolific display of vampires, witches and werewolves now, you can't go anywhere without running into some expression of the supernatural. People are fascinated by the supernatural, just as we were created to be. However, the amount of people, christian or not, that participate in the dark forms of the supernatural, is disturbing at best. It seems to be at epidemic proportions. I hear things all the time about how these ungodly things inspire creativity, parallel to Jesus and so on and so forth.
Actually, I'm not here to be the hall monitor about what to watch and what not to watch or participate in this season, because The Holy Spirit can show you what is wholesome and pleasing to Him and what will either benefit or hinder your spiritual life. But I am here to give you truth, straight-up, about what discernment is, just Who it's from and why the original form of the supernatural is infinitely better than any second-rate copy out there. If you want inspiration, you need look no further than The Holy Spirit!
When a person accepts the Lordship of Jesus in their lives, they also receive The Holy Spirit as a teacher and a guide, One Who will lead us into all truth. We are participants though in this process, and if we are filling our minds with dark things or things we have no business in, or walking after the things of the flesh, then we really aren't submitting willingly to His leading. In John 16, Jesus gives an excellent description of this third Person of God. "When The Counselor comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when He, The Spirit of Truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you." (verses 8-14)
The Holy Spirit's job is to make known to us the will of Our loving Heavenly Father. He leads us away from harm. Romans 8 tells us, "Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God. You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ." (verses 5-9)
That's why I don't have to read something or watch something to know it's not good for me. The Holy Spirit will make it very clear to me when I am to have nothing to do with something. It's a good indication that if it has to do with things He's already set a boundary on or forbidden, than chances are, He isn't going to invite me to participate in it! John 3:19-21, "This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
God desires to tell us everything from His specific will for our lives, to doing things a better, more efficient way, or giving us exciting new ideas. He wants to demonstrate His power in us and through us. His will isn't for us to be sick and down and out or chained to addictions, lusts, darkness or sin. The 3rd chapter of John expresses this perfectly, "Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth."
There is a righteous standard, but it's one that God has set because He wants us to prosper! He doesn't want us to operate at some limited low-level sorcery to get what we want out of life. He so desires to help us and set our feet on a good path. We aren't going to get to His wonderful promises by mucking around with things that aren't even based on His truth and light. Those things aren't going to unlock the secrets of the universe for us. Proverbs 25:2 says, "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings."
Do you want to know the secrets of the ages? Do you want to know what's up? Ask the King of Glory. Seek God out about all things and He will reward your persistence. You'll be able to tell what's right from wrong, you'll be able to start discerning what the successful path is for you. You'll be inspired to create, but it'll be creativity based on what's true and good and it will have Heaven's power behind it, something that truly is based on eternity.
Matthew 7:7-11 is one of the first passages of scripture I came to memorize when I was little and it's always stuck with me. "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!"
Nothing inspires creativity better than The Creator Himself! Think about it while you are enjoying the brilliance of this fall season and ask The Holy Spirit to help you discern! You'll also get to know God a whole lot better and find that He is so good - better than a shallow imitation of power. You'll find He is The Truth and Abundant Life.
